8 DAYS A.D.

I still can’t fathom what has happened to the Oilers in the past 8 days. The draft lottery was the stuff of Oilers fight songs in 100 years time but a total house cleaning at the top too? I still stick to my two theories that I either died sometime on the evening of the 17th of April or I'm currently in a coma and this is all a dream.Whatever the case if my wishes keep getting granted at this rate I should be married to Natalie Portman at 2 PM next Thursday. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony and the 9 day non stop party afterwards.

REVIEWING THE 2010 DRAFT

Source: Lowetide
Date: 2015-04-26

This is where it all began. The Katz rebuild (legend holds) began on a cold January day when the Oilers owner, after hearing the only way to get jacks and kings was to tank, not only endorsed it, but suggested the team scorch the earth and wait for the northern prairie winter to do the rest. The rebuild continues and until recently the 2010 draft has been regarded as an absolute failure. No. 1 overall: L Taylor Hall. The human chance machine has been the best reason to watch an Oilers game five years running. By Christmas of year one he was pushing the river and that’s been the story since. Robbed of a berth in the Annual All-Star selection 2014, he is absolutely one of the best LW

Who Is The Odd-Man Out?

Source: The Oilers Rig
Date: 2015-04-26

It’s been well known since the Nicholson/Chiarelli press conference that Peter Chiarelli is not scared to make deals that will make the team better. He’s also not scared to trade younger star players. Taylor Hall already came out saying he was concerned that he may be dealt before he gets a chance to receive a pass from Connor McDavid on the “left shot, black tape, left side.” Chiarelli had an interesting quote when he mentioned he wasn’t scared of trading a young player to make his team better, regardless of how well that player does once he leaves the organization. Every deal is a calculated risk, and as long as you believe you’re making your team better

CRYSTAL BALL (CHIARELLI EDITION)

Source: Lowetide
Date: 2015-04-26

One way to look into the immediate future is to check on the distant past. When Peter Chiarelli took over the Boston Bruins in 2006, they were a team outside the playoffs with some major roster weaknesses. Their best center was 20 and brillint (C Patrice Bergeron) and their best scoring-winger was 23 and looked like he was going to be a star (Brad Boyes). CHIARELLI’S FIRST SUMMER (2006) Signed UFA D Zdeno Chara and UFA C Marc Savard to long-term deals. “We were really aggressive out of the gate,” interim general manager Jeff Gorton said on a conference call. “It made it much easier to sign Savard after Chara signed with us. He could see how serious we were about winn

Darnell Nurse hanging in against Connor McDavid — just barely

Source: Edmonton Journal - Cult of Hockey
Date: 2015-04-26

Nurse has played well at even strength against McDavid, but struggled killing penalties The battle of Oilers prospect Darnell Nurse against soon-to-be Oilers first overall pick Connor McDavid in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs has proven that McDavid is NHL-ready, if there was ever any doubt, but leaves open the question of where Nurse should start the 2015-16 season. McDavid scored a hat trick in the first game of the series, an Erie loss, then two more goals in the second game, which Erie won. He is the best hockey prospect since Sidney Crosby, so it’s no surprise that he’s continued to dominate even against the OHL’s bet regular season team, the Sault Ste Marie Greyh

HEAVY STICK, HEAVY PLAYER

Source: Oilers Nation

The Edmonton Oilers as a team will experience another summer of change in 2015. Craig MacTavish had a mind to return 80% of the roster next season—and salary commitments mean massive overhaul is impossible—but the number of jobs available may increase after trades and buyouts under new GM Peter Chiarelli.

BRINGING THE CRAZY

Source: Lowetide
Date: 2015-04-25

As expected, we’re about to enter a period where current Oilers are going to be discussed in trade rumors. As much as is possible, this blog will attempt to assess the ideas/rumors and we’ll come to a conclusion together in the comments section. Joe Haggerty, Comcast Sportsnet: Top draft choice Connor McDavid is heading to Edmonton, and there’s a good chance the Oilers will make Jordan Eberle or Taylor Hall available this summer. And a team like Edmonton will be in the market for a number of things to upgrade its flawed roster. They’ve long appreciated Milan Lucic’s game in Edmonton, and the Oilers need Lucic’s type of toughness, size and snarl among their top si

Peter Chiarelli Hired as Oilers GM: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Source: Bleacher Report
Date: 2015-04-25

The Edmonton Oilers named Peter Chiarelli as the team’s general manager and President of Hockey Operations Friday.  The team’s official Twitter account shared the news: The Oilers finished a disappointing 24-44-14 on the season and were eliminated from playoff contention in the loaded Western Conference early in the schedule. Only the Arizona Coyotes had fewer points in the West than Edmonton’s 62.  It is not surprising then that there were significant changes, and Chris Johnston of Sportsnet noted that the team didn’t wait too long into the offseason to make them: While the Oilers were one of the league’s worst teams this season, Chiarelli is stepp

Gary Bettman's 'Katy Perry' Comments the Latest Sign He Can't Relate to NHL Fans

Source: Bleacher Report
Date: 2015-04-25

Gary Bettman has been the commissioner of the National Hockey League since 1993. It's fair to say that over his two decades of service, fans have heard him say things that have upset them. Venom and vitriol are accepted collateral damage for anyone in Bettman's position. During the 2014-15 season, however, Bettman has put his foot in his mouth so many times that he might have toenails stuck between his back teeth. The latest mistake occurred Friday, when Bettman was asked about fans in Winnipeg chanting "Katy Perry" in the general direction of Anaheim Ducks star Corey Perry. Bettman had a chance to say something intelligent and thoughtful about the sexist chants in Games 3 and 4 of the Jets-

Suspect defence & goaltending torpedoed Craig MacTavish’s brief era as Edmonton Oilers’ GM

Source: Edmonton Journal - Cult of Hockey
Date: 2015-04-25

I’ve always believed that when you’re assessing goaltenders, if you have to ask the question you know the answer. The question would be, has Devan [Dubnyk] established himself as a number one goalie in the National Hockey League? And I still think it’s a valid question. So, I think that Devan, although he’s trending upwards in his numbers and played adequately for us this year, I still think, and I know Devan feels the same way, that there’s another level for him. From our standpoint, we’ll see that he can get to that level. — Craig MacTavish, 2013 May Thus spake Craig MacTavish in the weeks following his ascension to the job as General Manager of th
