The Edmonton Oilers have the pressure of an entire country on their shoulders as they look to deliver Canada its first Stanley Cup in 31 years. Expectations for Connor McDavid, largely considered the best in the world, continue to mount as well. Jitters and emotions could spike to dangerously high levels in Game 1 of the Final versus the Florida Panthers.
Therefore, it is essential that Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch construct the ideal lineup for Saturday’s big road matchup. He is showing some faith in one of his coldest players.
Forward Warren Foegele is returning to the lineup after being a healthy scratch for Edmonton’s previous three games against the Dallas Stars, via ESPN. Knoblauch clearly values his upside, speed and size versus a physical Panthers squad that will try to push around the Oilers.
Foegele, a 2014 third-round draft pick who started his NHL journey with the Carolina Hurricanes, scored a career-high 20 goals this season and proved to be a useful contributor for much of the year. He has precipitously fallen in the playoffs, however, recording just one point since Game 2 of Edmonton’s first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings.
There is no better time for redemption than in the Stanley Cup Final. He is getting the opportunity to help this championship-starved franchise seize the sport’s top prize for the first time since the George H.W. Bush Administration. How Foegele handles that unique responsibility in Game 1 will likely determine how much trust Knoblauch extends him for the remainder of this series.
The New York Rangers blazed into the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs as what many believed to be the most complete hockey team in the world, poised to represent the Eastern Conference in the Final for the first time since 1994. Florida suffocated the Presidents’ Trophy winners following Game 3 and proceeded to dictate the tempo for most of the final three contests.
The Oilers have to establish their offense early. They have thrived on both sides of the power play en route to this ultimate face-off with the Panthers and must stay sharp on Saturday night. Striking first in hostile territory, especially the rabid environment that accompanies a Stanley Cup Final matchup, could be instrumental in Edmonton stealing a win in Amerant Bank Arena.
Warren Foegele figures to be a factor if this team hopes to complete that objective in Game 1.
