The Florida Panthers have control of the Stanley Cup Final in the early going. And it is thanks to an unreal performance from goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Florida hasn’t generated as many chances, but Bobrovsky has held a historic Edmonton Oilers offense at bay through two periods. And one highlight reel save showcases his dominance in Game 1.

Edmonton went on the power play when Sam Bennett was called for interference. The Oilers went to work, looking to cut the deficit in half. And it seemed as if they were about to do just that. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a wide open net to work with, and fired a shot. However, Bobrovsky was able to keep the puck out with a remarkable effort.

As mentioned, the Panthers have not generated a major amount of offensive opportunities. In fact, Edmonton has had the lion’s share of the scoring chances. At the second intermission, they outshoot Florida 26-12. But Bobrovsky has kept his team well and truly in control of the game thanks to a few big-time saves.

For example, he came up with a big breakaway save in the first period. This save once again came against Nugent-Hopkins when Edmonton was on the power play. He also came up with a breakaway save against Connor Brown in the second period, which led to a scrum after the whistle.

Beyond this performance, the Panthers have made the most of their few scoring chances. Forward Carter Verhaeghe scored with his team’s first shot of the game. And in the second period, Evan Rodrigues scored in the low slot to double the lead. The hosting Panthers maintained this lead into the second intermission.

Additionally, Florida is winning the game in a few key areas. For instance, they have delivered nearly 50 hits through two periods of play. This vastly outnumbers Edmonton’s 26 checks from the first two frames. Furthermore, Florida is dominating in the faceoff circle, winning a whopping 61.5% of draws.

Sergei Bobrovsky has stood tall for his team early in the Stanley Cup Final. If he can keep this up, Florida will be well on their way to a Game 1 Stanley Cup Final win. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if the Oilers can mount a comeback in the third period.
