Calgary Tower makes its stance clear: no support for the Edmonton Oilers

When the Stanley Cup Final comes around, most fans, if their team isn’t in it, will pick a side and cheer for a team based on favorite players, former cities they have lived in, or even some regional bias.

That is not the case in Alberta.

With the Calgary Flames far from the Final picture, not even qualifying for the playoffs this year, some might think the city would rally for its provincial brethren, as the Edmonton Oilers are trying to become the first Canadian to win Lord Stanley’s Cup since the Montreal Canadiens did so in 1993.

In the heart of downtown Calgary stands Calgary Tower, a structure that offers a 360-degree view of the city and nearby mountains. On Monday, the tower will be lit blue and orange for Action Anxiety Day, coincidentally the same colors as the Oilers, who are getting ready for Game 2 of the Final against the Florida Panthers.

On the Calgary Tower’s social media page, a post stated the reason for the illuminated pigmentation on the structure, and that it was not meant to be in favor of the Flames’ rivals.

“We’ve got love for our neighbours to the north,” the post stated. “And all across this province, but no. Never.”

Just to be totally clear, the Calgary Tower will be lit Blue & Orange on Monday, June 10 for Action Anxiety Day – and for no other reason whatsoever.

On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the humorous post, as the Battle of Alberta carries on and off the ice.

Frank Seravalli: “Just to be totally clear,”…Best line in this. It has nothing to do with the Edmonton Oilers. I’m not sure if the Calgary Tower would survive if that were the case.

Tyler Yaremchuk: You know there’s so many people driving around Calgary who aren’t on social media, who are seeing that going, “What the hell is going on right now?”
