Oilers’ Carrick fined for slashing Kulikov; no further discipline for Leon Draisaitl

The NHL Department of Player Safety had a few things to look at after Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.

On Tuesday, the DoPS announced that Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Carrick is being fined $2,213.54 for slashing Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov. The amount is the maximum allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement.

The incident happened with less than two minutes to go in the game, with the Panthers having just taken a 4-1 lead. Kulikov threw a hard, but clean hit on Carrick. The 32-year-old did not take too kindly to the check, taking retaliatory action by hitting Kulikov with his stick in a very uncomfortable area.

Carrick received a two-minute minor for slashing and a 10-minute misconduct on the play. This is the first time Carrick has received any supplemental discipline in his NHL career.

The other noteworthy incident happened near the halfway mark of the second period. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov suffered an apparent injury after taking a hit by Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl.

There was no penalty called on the play. Barkov was forced to leave the game and did not return. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Carrick’s fine is the only discipline being handed out from the second game of the final, meaning Draisaitl will be available for Game 3.

The Panthers have all the momentum as the Final heads to Edmonton. After being heavily outplayed in Game 1, Florida controlled the play on Monday night, helping take the first two games of the series on home ice.

Game 3 is set for Thursday night at Rogers Place with puck drop shortly after 8 p.m. ET.
