Andrew Cogliano retires from NHL after 19 seasons 

After 1,294 career NHL games, Colorado Avalanche forward Andrew Cogliano has announced his retirement.

Cogliano played 1,294 regular-season games over 19 seasons with five different teams (Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche). He sits 76th on the all-time list for games played. The 37-year-old played in 131 Stanley Cup Playoff games, including finally winning his only Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022. He became the 18th player in NHL history to win the cup after playing in 1,000 games.

Cogliano was best known for his durability, defensive acumen and short-handed skill. The speedy winger began his NHL career playing 830 consecutive games. That included all 82 games across the first nine seasons of his career. His ‘Iron Man’ streak finally ended in 2018 as the fourth-longest in NHL history.

The Toronto native wraps up his career with 464 points (190 goals — 22 short-handed–, 274 assists) and a plus-31 rating. He added 40 points (13 goals, 27 assists) in the playoffs.

In a rare occurrence, Cogliano actually recorded his career-high 45 points (18 goals, 27 assists) in his rookie season with the Oilers in 2007-08. He was originally drafted by Edmonton in the first round (No. 25) of the 2005 NHL Draft.

Cogliano will be joining the Avalanche front office, assisting in player development and professional and amateur scouting and working with the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles.

“The game of hockey has given me and my family so much, and I am grateful for every moment,” Cogliano said in a statement released by the Avalanche. “I am blessed to have played for so long with some great organizations and amazing teammates. I will miss being with the guys in the dressing room and battling for each other on the ice every night, but it’s time to move on. Thank you to everyone I ever played with, played for and all the great fans for all of their support. I am excited to start my new chapter in the front office.”
