How winning a Stanley Cup would help Connor McDavid’s legacy

Regardless of the result of the Stanley Cup Final’s Game 7, Connor McDavid has already carved out one of hockey’s greatest legacies.

Since entering the league, the 27-year-old Edmonton Oilers’ captain has been unstoppable, hitting the 100-point mark in seven of his nine NHL seasons, leading the league in scoring five times, winning the Hart Trophy three times, and in just 645 career regular-season games, has 982 career points.

He’s kept the pedal to the metal in this Stanley Cup Final, recording three goals and eight assists for 11 points so far against the Florida Panthers. He leads the post-season with 34 assists and 42 points, and became just the third player in NHL history to hit the 40-point mark in a single playoff season.

With a win Monday night, the conversation could start to transition from “McDavid being the best player in the league” to “McDavid being one of the game’s greatest players of all-time.” It would be impossible to argue otherwise.

Tyler Yaremchuk: If the Oilers win, for Connor McDavid to be leading this team, it automatically vaults right up to the level of Wayne Gretzky’s level. The individual numbers will be there, and I know Gretzky had multiple rings, but pulling off this 3-0 comeback, eight total points in Games 4 and 5, to me, it puts him in another stratosphere.

Frank Seravalli: Maybe not Gretzky-level, but what I’ll say is, when it’s all said and done, this is a perfect start to him ending up on the NHL’s Mount Rushmore.
