Drake catches strays after Oilers’ failed Stanley Cup Final comeback bid

The Dallas Mavericks lost in the NBA Finals, the Edmonton Oilers dropped Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night, and Drake is out a cool $1 million USD.

The Canadian rapper went 0-for-2 with his NBA and NHL championship picks, wagering $500K that the Mavs would beat the Boston Celtics, and the same amount that the Oilers would outlast the Florida Panthers.

Boston took care of Dallas in Game 5 at TD Garden last week, and although Florida needed until a decisive Game 7, they were also able to capture their first-ever championship in front of the home crowd at Amerant Bank Arena.

And Drake, who has been all around the news due to his highly-publicized beef with Kendrick Lamar, was not safe from social media criticism on Monday night:

Mans bet on himself and lost. Bet on the Mavericks and lost. Bet on the Oilers and lost.

Jesus Christ, loser, take Kendrick's advice and stop gambling @Drake ! pic.twitter.com/U8mYCjefBF

Panthers slip in “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar on the arena sound track.

Reminder that the Oilers skate out to “Push Ups” by Drake (the Kendrick diss) before every game.

Not even Connor McDavid could help Drake break even

The Oilers were oh-so-close to completing a historic reverse sweep after being down 3-0 to the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. Edmonton bounced back with three straight victories, forcing a winner-take-all Game 7 in South Beach on Monday.

But it wasn’t to be for the Canadian club or the Canadian rapper; both were left disappointed when time expired. The Oilers have no reason to hang their heads, it was an incredible effort to even make the championship series, and almost making the full comeback was extremely impressive.

But someone has to lose, and it was the Canadians who took the L in Sunrise.

“We knew it was going to be tight, Game 7 for the Cup,” McDavid said in his heart-wrenching postgame press conference, per NHL.com. “We knew it was going to be a real tight game and it was going to come down to one thing here or there. We’re an inch away from going ahead 2-1 before they go ahead 2-1. It’s tough. They do a good job of shutting things down and we had our looks. We just didn’t find it.”

The Oilers fell behind 1-0 before quickly tying the game before the contest was 10 minutes old. There would only be one more tally in the tilt, a Sam Reinhart Stanley Cup-clinching goal in the second period of one of the most monumental NHL games in history.

“We never stopped believing,” McDavid said. “We really believed we were going to get one. I have that one in front, Zach [Hyman] has a whack at it, ‘Bouch’ [Evan Bouchard] has got all kinds of looks. We had a lots of looks, it just didn’t go.”

It’s now going to be a long summer after another Canadian team advanced to the Stanley Cup Final just to fall short. Dating back to 1993, seven times Canadian teams have advanced to the championship, and seven times they’ve been defeated.

For Drake, the $1 million down the drain is probably a drop in the bucket for one of the wealthier celebrities in North America. But it didn’t spare him from getting roasted on social media, and the Oilers are getting the same treatment after failing to get the job done.
