Oilers sign Josh Brown to three-year, $3 million contract

The Edmonton Oilers added some veteran depth on their blue line Monday, signing defenseman Josh Brown to a three-year, $3 million contract, according to Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli.

The 30-year-old blueliner spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Coyotes, scoring three goals and seven assists for 10 points and 75 penalty minutes in 51 games in 2023-24. In six NHL seasons, Brown has 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points in 290 career regular-season games with the Coyotes, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Brown spent four seasons in junior with the OHL’s Oshawa Generals. In his last season in 2014-15, he captained the team to an OHL Championship over Connor McDavid’s Erie Otters.

Bob Stauffer, the radio color commentator for the Oilers, says Brown is “a hard-nosed third-pairing right-handed defender” who Edmonton’s pro scouts have liked for a while.”

It was a busy day for the Oilers, who so far have re-signed Connor Brown to a one-year contract, James Hamblin to a two-year, two-way contract, and Noah Philp to a one-year, two-way contract.

The Oilers finished the 2023-24 with a 49-27-6 record and 104 points, second in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division. They advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2005-06, but were eliminated by the Florida Panthers in seven games, losing 2-1 in Game 7.
