Senators acquire Xavier Bourgault, Jake Chiasson from Oilers for Roby Jarventie, 2025 pick

A former high-end prospect is heading across the country.

On Monday, the Ottawa Senators acquired forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from the Edmonton Oilers. In return, the Oilers have received forward Roby Järventie and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Bourgault came into the NHL ranks as a rather high-end prospect. The L’Islet, Quebec native was taken by the Oilers in the first round, 22nd overall, of the 2021 NHL Draft. However, he has not been able to turn the scoring prowess that he had in the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League into the professional game. After scoring 34 points in 62 games with Edmonton’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, during the 2022-23 season, Bourgault posted just 20 points in 50 games this past year.

At just 21 years old, he has plenty of time to improve his game, and become a useful player capable of making it to the NHL. A change of scenery might be exactly what he needs. Bourgault has one more year on his entry-level contract with an AAV of $1,167,500.

Chiasson has two more years on his current contract, with an annual cap hit of $843,333. The Abbotsford, British Columbia native was also drafted by the Oilers in 2021, as his name was heard in the fourth round, 116th overall. After four-plus years in the Western Hockey League, he joined the Oilers ranks, spending most of the 2023-24 campaign with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, scoring nine goals and 20 points in 68 games. Chiasson played just one game with the Condors.

The Oilers have one pick in the fourth round of next year’s draft and just four total, as their first, second, fourth, and fifth-round picks have been traded away.

Like Bourgault, Järventie had some expectations when the Senators selected him in the second round, 33rd overall, in the 2020 NHL Draft. Unlike the other two players in this deal, he has had NHL experience. The Tampere, Finland native played seven games with Ottawa this past season, registering his first point, an assist, against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 8.

Most of the last three-plus seasons have seen Järventie play with the Sens’ primary affiliate, the Belleville Senators. In 136 AHL games, he has scored 38 goals and 86 points. He has one more year on his entry-level contract, with an $894,167 cap hit.
