The multiple Stanley Cup champions will have their names enshrined at @RogersPlace on October 25 prior to the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
MacTavish was signed by the Oilers in 1985, right in the middle of the team’s dynasty with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri. He would be a key depth piece on a team that won the Stanley Cup in 1987, 1988 and 1990. The London, Ontario native was an alternate captain during that 1989-90 season and was later named captain in 1992. MacTavish was traded to the New York Rangers during the 1993-94 season, helping that team end their 54-year drought, and win the Stanley Cup.
He ended up playing 701 games for the Oilers, good for 10th-most in franchise history. He totaled 155 goals and 176 assists for 331 points, including 37 points in 113 Stanley Cup Playoff appearances.
After retiring from playing, MacTavish returned to Edmonton in 1999 to be an assistant coach. The following year, he was named the team’s new head coach. During eight seasons at the helm, the Oilers went 301-252-47, with the team advancing to the Final in 2006.
Gregg, a native of Edmonton, joined the Oilers during the 1982 playoffs. He went on to play parts of the next nine seasons with the team and is one of just seven players to have won all five Stanley Cups with the franchise. In 453 games, Gregg scored 40 goals and 148 assists for 188 points. He appeared in 130 playoff games, which is sixth in franchise history.
Gregg retired multiple times in his career, returning to the Oilers in 1986 and 1988, coming back to the team in time to win Cups. He also represented on multiple occasions, playing for Team Canada at the 1980 and 1988 Winter Olympics, and winning the Canada Cup in 1984.
