Former Edmonton Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom announces retirement

Oscar Klefbom, who played seven seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, officially retired from the NHL on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old defenceman from Karlstad, Sweden, hadn’t played in the league since 2020 due to a shoulder injury.

“I’m just grateful that I got the chance to play as many games as I did,” Klefbom said in an NHLPA social media post.

Klefbom was drafted in the first round, 19th overall, by the Oilers in 2011.

He made his NHL debut two years later and recorded 156 points (34 goals and 122 assists) in 378 career games.

Klefbom last played during the qualification round for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He had two assists in four games as the Oilers were eliminated in the best-of-five series against the Chicago Blackhawks.
