Oilers bring in Dermott on pro tryout

The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Travis Dermott to a professional tryout, the club announced Friday.

Dermott has previously played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, but he spent 2023-24 with the Arizona Coyotes. The 27-year-old collected two goals and five assists while averaging 17:17 of ice time over 50 games.

The Ontario-born blue-liner became the first player to use Pride tape on his stick in October after the league banned it just before the season began. Dermott said afterward that "we need supporters of a movement like this." The league ultimately reversed the ban.

Dermott suited up for the Canucks in 2022-23 and split the previous campaign with them and the Maple Leafs, who traded him to Vancouver for a third-round pick.

He spent his first four full seasons with the Leafs, who drafted him 34th overall in 2015. That same year, the Oilers chose Connor McDavid first overall. Dermott and McDavid were teammates with the OHL's Erie Otters for two campaigns from 2013-15.
