McDavid has missed the Oilers’ last three games with an ankle injury suffered last Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 27-year-old was injured on the opening shift when he fell while skating the puck into the offensive zone, colliding with the sideboards before sliding into the corner. When skating off the ice, it looked as if he was favoring his left leg.

McDavid’s lone shift lasted a total of 37 seconds, and he didn’t return after that.

What is amazing about the Newmarket, Ontario native’s return is that he was originally ruled out for 2-3 weeks. The injury occurred 10 days ago.

McDavid had been skating for the last couple of days and looked pretty comfortable. When speaking to the media on Tuesday, he said he “got good news on his injury.”

If you include the game against the Blue Jackets, the Oilers have done okay in McDavid’s absence, splitting their last four games, including a win over the rival Calgary Flames. However, Edmonton was shut out by the New Jersey Devils on Monday.

So far in the 2024-25 season, McDavid has scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 10 games, averaging over 20 minutes per game. Despite missing time, he is still second on the team in scoring behind Leon Draisaitl, who has 16 points through 13 games.

McDavid and the Oilers came into the 2024-25 season hot off making it to the Stanley Cup Final last spring, when their captain notched 42 points in 25 postseason games. His efforts were enough to earn him the Conn Smythe Trophy despite the team losing to the Florida Panthers in the final.

The Oilers (6-6-1) are fifth in the Pacific Division in winning percentage (.500) and points (13). Puck drop for their matchup with the Golden Knights is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.
