Report: Red Wings place Jack Campbell on waivers

The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers Sunday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

Campbell has been in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program since early October, but he's now cleared to return, Friedman adds.

Detroit signed Campbell to a one-year deal worth $775,000 on July 1. He became a free agent after the Edmonton Oilers placed him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout in late June.

Campbell had three more seasons remaining on the five-year, $25-million contract he signed with the Oilers in July 2022.

He appeared in one preseason game with the Red Wings this fall, surrendering two goals on 22 shots, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Campbell last played in an NHL regular-season game last November. He struggled to start the 2023-24 campaign, posting an .873 save percentage in five showings. Edmonton then sent him down to the AHL, where he appeared in 33 games for the Bakersfield Condors and logged an 18-13-1 record to go along with a .918 clip.

The 32-year-old has played in 176 career NHL games, split between the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Oilers.

Campbell enjoyed some of his best statistical campaigns in Toronto, including in 2021-22 when he posted an outstanding 31-9-6 record and .914 save percentage.

Detroit has deployed Alex Lyon, Cam Talbot, and Ville Husso between the pipes so far this season.
