Oilers loan defenceman Josh Brown to AHL affiliate

Just three days after being recalled from the AHL, Edmonton Oilers defenceman Josh Brown is headed back to the Bakersfield Condors.

Edmonton announced the 30-year-old had been loaned out on Wednesday.

Brown was recalled after Darnell Nurse was injured by a hit to the head from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves. The 30-year-old defenceman played in two games with the Oilers, averaging 11 minutes and 29 seconds of ice time per game and collecting seven penalty minutes — five of which came on a fight against Ottawa Senators forward Zack MacEwen on Tuesday.

Brown signed a three-year, $3 million contract with the Oilers in the off-season, but was unable to crack Edmonton’s roster out of training camp and cleared waivers to start the year.

In 12 games with Bakersfield, the London, Ont. native recorded two assists and a plus-5 rating. He was also called for 46 minutes worth of penalties.

According to PuckPedia, the move allows the Oilers to get under the cap, meaning that without any roster moves, they would be able to add a $1.4 million cap hit at the trade deadline.
