Brad Marchand’s perfect words about playing through injuries

Zach Hyman suffered a broken nose in a game against the Florida Panthers. When Brad Marchand was asked what it’s like playing through such an injury, he gave an amazing answer!

Hockey players are a different breed. In Monday’s game between the Oilers and the Panthers, Zach Hyman took a clapper from Evan Bouchard right to the face. He went to the locker room but later returned to the game with a fishbowl on his face.

During Thursday’s morning skate, Hyman revealed that he had suffered a broken nose, which was evident just by looking at him. He’s now wearing a full face shield and has a splint on the bridge of his nose for protection.
“It feels OK. I’ve broken my nose a bunch,” Hyman said, per the Edmonton Journal. “This one was a little bit worse than the previous ones, probably.”

Fans were amazed that Hyman returned to the game on Monday—and on Thursday, he even scored a goal against the Boston Bruins. Ahead of the game, Brad Marchand was asked what it’s like playing with a broken nose, and he gave a great answer.

“The hardest thing is your breathing,” Marchand said. “And the toughest time is … sometimes, it blocks your breathing for a long time until you get surgery to fix it.”

Marchand then spoke honestly about how there are far worse injuries to deal with.

“But honestly, those are some of the easiest injuries to play through. Facial injuries are not a big deal to play through,” Marchand said. “You put a bubble on, you play through it. It’s the lower-body injuries that are difficult—like back, hip, or knee injuries. That’s when it gets tough, because it affects your skating.
“Cuts and broken bones in the face don’t affect your skating, which is where the game’s played nowadays. So, obviously, it hurts initially. And when you can’t breathe, it’s hard. But when you can’t skate—when you’re on one leg or your back’s sore and you can’t move—that’s what really affects your game.”

On social media, fans all said the same thing about Marchand’s response, and the question from the reporter.

”I hate how much I like him,” another said.

”Impossible not to like him honestly,” a third added.
