The NHL has suspended McDavid twice in his 686-game career. He got two games for an illegal check to the head of Nick Leddy in 2019 and was banned for six contests in 2022 for boarding Mikey Anderson.
Johansson has five goals and 16 points in 44 games this season.
McDavid ranks fourth in the NHL with 62 points in 41 contests. He's a five-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer and has claimed the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP three times.
The Oilers play Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche.
