Veteran defenceman John Klingberg agrees to join Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are adding some experience to their blueline.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the team has agreed to a deal with veteran defenceman John Klingberg. Terms of the deal were not yet known.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played in more than 400 days since he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs but made it known that he was looking to resume his NHL career.

Klingberg appeared in just 14 games last season with the Leafs before being placed on long-term injured reserve with a hip injury. He signed a one-year, $4.15-million contract in free agency to add more offence from the blueline but struggled through the first two months of the season — with four assists and a minus-7.

The Swedish defenceman has had issues with his hip before having double hip surgery in 2014.
