Connor McDavid let frustration get the best of him against the Canucks this past weekend, leading to his ejection after a cross-check to Connor Garland’s face. Now, two former NHLers have publicly defended McDavid’s actions, even claiming they’re fans of what he did.
In the Oilers’ game against the Canucks on Saturday, McDavid had finally had enough of Connor Garland holding on to him in the Canucks’ zone. In response, he cross-checked Garland in the head.
Following the lengthy grappling match between the two players, McDavid received a game misconduct and is now awaiting a hearing, which will likely result in a suspension.
Not everyone is against McDavid’s actions, however. On social media, several fans and former players have expressed their support for him, including former NHLer Mike Rupp.
“Does anyone else NOT have a problem w/what McDavid did here? Or even low key LOVED it? Just curious…” Rupp said on his X account.
Former NHLer Chris Pronger responded to Rupp’s post, saying he, in fact, loved what McDavid did.
“Actually love it,” Pronger said. “He needs to do this more often—maybe not to the level of suspension like this—but it will give him some extra space. Teams key on taking time and space away from him and try to frustrate him. Taking it into your own hands is good … sometimes.”
Many also argued that the referees should have done a better job protecting McDavid, suggesting their inaction allowed his frustration to boil over.
