'Cheese on the ice': Thompson overcomes tossed nachos in victory

A tray of nachos briefly derailed the Washington Capitals' 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

A fan threw nachos onto the ice early in the third period that appeared to distract Capitals goalie Logan Thompson right before Corey Perry beat him with a one-time blast for Edmonton's second goal of the game.

Although the snack landed decently far from the Capitals' crease, Thompson animatedly pointed at the nachos after the goal.

Here's a closer look at the nachos:

Edmonton's Corey Perry just trimmed #AllCaps lead to 3-2 on a one-timer from the left circle, but he had a little help.

The help? A plate of nachos on the ice.

After the game, Thompson said what most people were probably thinking.

"I've never seen nachos and cheese on the ice," he told Sportsnet's Gene Principe.

However, Thompson conceded that he should've stayed alert despite the on-ice invader.

"It's a weak goal on my part. I kinda stopped playing," he said. "I was distracted. I've never seen that before, but the goal still counted."

He added, "I was swearing a bit, saying, 'There's some cheese on the ice.' (The officials) didn't see it, so it's not necessarily their fault. ... I've got to play to the whistle, that one's on me."

As for the man who scored the goal, Perry said he didn't notice the nachos.

"If they were there before, whatever, I was focused on the play," he said.

The incident didn't put too much of a damper on Thompson's night. He made 30 saves on 32 shots to extend the Capitals' win streak to five games.

Thompson has picked up at least one point in each of his last 11 outings and owns a .925 save percentage and 22-2-3 record on the campaign.
