Canucks’ Sherwood exits early against Oilers

Already having a rough go of things, the Vancouver Canucks lost one of their heart-and-soul players on Thursday night.

The team announced at the start of the third period, while down 5-2 to the Edmonton Oilers, that forward Kiefer Sherwood would miss the remainder of the game.

No reason was given for his absence, but Sherwood’s final shift came midway through the second period. He finished the night with 6:10 of ice time, one blocked shot, three hits and two penalty minutes.

Sherwood, 29, signed a two-year, $3-million deal with the Canucks in July. Entering Thursday’s game, he had 21 points (13 goals and eight assists) and a league-leading 270 hits in 46 games.
