Report: Capitals sign Thompson to 6-year, $35.1M extension

The Washington Capitals signed goaltender Logan Thompson to a six-year extension with a cap hit of $5.85 million, TSN's Chris Johnston reports.

Thompson is having a superb first season with the Capitals, posting a .925 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average in 27 games to go with a 22-2-3 record. He ranks second in GAA and third in wins and SV% across the league.

The 27-year-old was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Thompson's current $766,667 cap hit is the lowest in the NHL this season and under the league minimum salary.

Washington acquired Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights last summer for two third-round picks.

Thompson played a career-high 46 games last season with the Golden Knights. He posted a .908 SV% and 2.70 GAA. Thompson started Games 1-4 of Vegas' first-round series against the Dallas Stars last year. He had a .921 SV% but was replaced by Adin Hill for the remainder of the series after Thompson allowed three goals on 31 shots in Game 4.

The Calgary native played one season at Brock University before turning pro in 2019. He's one of three Canadian university alumni to play in the NHL this season, along with Derek Ryan and Noah Philp of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Golden Knights signed Thompson as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He has a .915 career save percentage in 130 games between the Golden Knights and Capitals.
