Three Canadian teams make Round 2 for first time since 2004

It was a tough road, but the Winnipeg Jets survived a scare in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after beating the St. Louis Blues in double overtime in Game 7.

With the victory, the Jets join the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, marking a rare accomplishment for Canadian teams.

It has been 21 years since the Stanley Cup Playoffs featured three Canadian teams in the second round. The last time was when the Leafs, Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens made it to the quarterfinals in the 2003-04 season.

The Flames would then reach the Stanley Cup Final, eventually losing in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Edmonton, Toronto and Winnipeg will now look to end Canada’s championship drought, with the last team from north of the border to win the Stanley Cup coming in 1993 when the Canadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings in five games.

The Leafs open their second-round series against the defending champion Florida Panthers on Monday, May 5th at 8 p.m. ET on Sportsnet. The Oilers travel to Vegas to take on the Golden Knights with Game 1 on Tuesday, May 6th at 9:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. MT.

Following their marathon victory over the Blues, the Jets will welcome the Dallas Stars in Game 1 on Wednesday, May 7th at 9:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. MT.
