If there’s an NHL record out there, Connor McDavid is sure to be chasing it.
On Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers captain became the second-fastest player in NHL history to reach 100 playoff assists, behind only fellow Oilers great Wayne Gretzky.
McDavid reached the feat in just 90 games — while Gretzky hit the milestone in 70 games, the next-fastest to hit 100 assists was Doug Gilmour in 125 post-season contests.
McDavid hit the 100-assist mark on the Oilers’ first goal of Game 5 against the Dallas Stars, a Corey Perry snipe that made the veteran just the second player in NHL history aged 40 or older to score in back-to-back Conference Final games.
A total of 25 players in league history have hit the 100-assist mark, with active players such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Nikita Kucherov also achieving the milestone.
Adam Oates, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri round out the list of players who accomplished the feat in the fewest games.
McDavid and Perry weren’t the only ones hitting milestones for the orange-and-blue on Thursday, as Jeff Skinner scored his first-ever playoff goal, to break an NHL-high streak of regular-season goals (373) without a marker in the post-season. Skinner’s goal was Edmonton’s third of the game.
