Brad Marchand continues to dominate the Edmonton Oilers. He scored his fourth goal in three games in the Finals on Monday, but he also had a viral moment with a humiliating gesture toward the Oilers’ bench.
Brad Marchand is truly one of a kind. Known as a true rat and one of the testiest players in the league, his greatest attribute is his ability to get in his opponents’ faces and under their skin.
But there’s no denying what a great player he is. Over the course of his legendary career, he’s averaged nearly a point per game in the playoffs. Marchand thrives in the biggest and most decisive moments—and he’s certainly proven it as a Florida Panther.
The hockey world was shocked when Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline, but he’s been an incredible fit in an already tough-playing Florida team. And during this year’s playoffs, Marchand has risen to the occasion, with 18 points in 20 games. On Monday, he became the oldest player in NHL history to score in each of the first three games of the Final, opening the scoring early in Game 3. But that wasn’t his only memorable moment.
With 17:14 played in the first period, the Oilers—already trailing 1–0—took their fourth penalty of the game. Marchand clearly sensed their frustration. As he skated toward the Panthers’ bench, he pointed to his head and told the Oilers to use their heads—a humiliating gesture that quickly went viral. Moments later, Carter Verhaeghe scored on the ensuing power play to give Florida a 2–0 lead. Corey Perry responded early in the second for Edmonton, but the Panthers answered just 80 seconds later. They ultimately ran away with a 6–1 win to take a 2–1 series lead.
