The Edmonton Oilers have added some depth.
The club has signed goaltender Matt Tomkins and forward Riley Stillman to two-year contracts worth $775,000 each.
Tomkins will likely serve as an AHL replacement for Olivier Rodrigue, whom the team elected not to give a qualifying offer to this week. Tomkins played in six NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2023-24, his only NHL action to date. He went 3-2-1 with a .892 save percentage. He had an opportunity to win the backup role for 2024-25, but ultimately spent the year sharing the crease with the Syracuse Crunch with Brandon Halverson and Ryan Fanti.
Originally drafted 199th overall in 2012, the Edmonton, Alberta native bounced around the AHL, ECHL and SHL for a few years before earning Canada’s starting gig at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. He went 2-1-0 with a shutout and a .963 save percentage as Canada failed to win a medal.
Stillman, 27, mostly spent last year in the AHL, putting up nine points in 35 games with the Chicago Wolves. He also skated in five NHL games, but didn’t register a point. Known more for his toughness, the 27-year-old has 26 points in 111 career games between Florida, Chicago, Vancouver, Buffalo and Carolina. Stillman is the son of former NHLer Corey Stillman.
Both players are expected to return to the AHL for 2025-26, giving the Bakersfield Condors some extra depth. With the pair having NHL experience, it should give the Oilers some confidence that they can help out if called upon during the season.
Notably, Jeff Skinner, Drake Caggiula, Jacob Perreault, Cameron Wright, Connor Carrick, Travis Dermott, Philip Kemp and Collin Delia have been left unsigned by the Oilers. Edmonton is coming off its second straight Stanley Cup Final appearance, having lost to the Florida Panthers both times.
