Connor McDavid shares brutally honest words about the Oilers

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are heading into the 2025–26 season as back-to-back Stanley Cup Final runners-up. But what has the best player in the world learned from the past two seasons? A lot, it seems.

The last time an NHL team lost consecutive Stanley Cup Finals was in 1977 and 1978, when the Boston Bruins fell twice in a row to the Montreal Canadiens. The only team to record three straight Final losses is the St. Louis Blues, who were defeated by the Canadiens in 1968 and 1969 and then by the Bruins in 1970.

Connor McDavid shares wisdoms

To avoid pulling a “Blues,” Connor McDavid and the Oilers have been trying to learn from their recent defeats. In a TSN interview with teammate Zach Hyman, McDavid elaborated on what he and the team have taken away from those experiences.
“What do you think our group has learned over the last few years that we can bring into this coming year?” Hyman asked.

”That’s not true at all”

“I think we’ve learned a lot. I think, you know, just because you lose in the Final doesn’t mean there aren’t wins, you know? I think everybody thinks about the Oilers as this, like, heartbroken team, but that’s not true at all. We’ve had a lot of success over the last number of years, in our runs and stuff like that. We’ve won a lot of playoff series. We’ve won a lot of playoff games. We know how to win when it matters,” McDavid replied, before continuing.

”Most motivated group”

“I think that narrative that we’re this heartbroken group that’s just, you know, devastated is just not even close to reality. I think we’re the most motivated group in the league. We’ve learned a lot. I think it’s only motivated us more, which I think is a dangerous thing.”
