Blackhawks sign defenceman Matt Grzelcyk after PTO

The Chicago Blackhawks are keeping one of the players they signed to a professional tryout around.

Matt Grzelcyk has reportedly signed a contract with the Blackhawks, keeping the defenceman in the Windy City into the regular season, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Sunday.

The financial terms of the deal were not initially reported.

Grzelcyk joined the Blackhawks ahead of the season for training camp and pre-season action. In three games, he has been held without a point but has carried an even plus-minus in 52:59 of total ice time.

He has also picked up one shot on goal and two blocked shots through the exhibition schedule.

The 31-year-old suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, tallying one goal and a career-high 39 assists in 82 games. He averaged 20:37 ice time per game.

Originally drafted 85th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2012, the Charlestown, Mass., native has 26 goals and 149 assists over 527 career games — most of which came in his eight years with the Bruins.
