NHL insider makes stunning claim about Connor McDavid’s contract

On Monday, Connor McDavid signed a two-year extension with the Edmonton Oilers, with an average annual salary of 12.5 million dollars. But now, NHL insider Frank Seravalli has made a stunning claim about the contract and how it was negotiated.

Connor McDavid is considered by most hockey fans to be the best player in the world. Before Monday, McDavid was entering the final year of his contract with the Oilers, and many speculated about how large his next deal would be. In the end, it turned out to be much lower than expected, coming in at 12.5 million dollars per year through the 2027–2028 season.

Stunning claim about Connor McDavid’s contract

The contract was signed on Monday, just one day before NHL opening night. Many fans and analysts wondered why it took so long. Now, NHL insider Frank Seravalli claims to know how the negotiations went.
“Sources indicate that even as recently as Sunday night, there was not a single number or contract term that had been volleyed back and forth between the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid’s camp. Nothing,” Seravalli explains in a video posted on X.

”Thank you very much”

“I’ve said for the last few weeks that Connor McDavid was going to wake up one day and decide either that he wanted to sign or not. He’d write down a number on a piece of paper, tell the Oilers what it was, and whether it was high, low, or somewhere in between, they’d nod and say, ‘Thank you very much, Mr. McDavid. We’ll have that drafted up for you to sign,’” he continues.

“Simple as that. And guess what — the call took five minutes on Monday morning to move things in that direction. Stan Bowman, the Edmonton Oilers general manager, was very clear after the conversation with Judd Moldaver, McDavid’s agent: ‘This isn’t what we would have pitched. This isn’t what we would have put on the table for him to sign. It certainly would have been more lucrative than that.’
“This was all at the behest of Connor McDavid — his vision and what he sees for the Edmonton Oilers,” Seravalli says.
