Jake Walman‘s season debut with the Edmonton Oilers will have to wait a little bit longer.
The Oilers have placed Walman on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday.
Walman, 28, did not appear in the Oilers’ season opener against the Calgary Flames in a shootout loss.
The Toronto native had been hopeful to play in the Flames game after missing the majority of pre-season with an undisclosed injury. He ultimately only appeared in one pre-season game.
Oilers bench boss Kris Knoblauch expected Walman to be ready for the season opener before having a setback.
Walman signed a seven-year, $49-million contract extension with the Oilers on Monday. He is coming off a career-high season offensively, tallying 33 assists and 40 points split between the Oilers and Sharks.
The Oilers are back in action on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks.
