Jay Bouwmeester’s hilarious reaction to seeing Connor McDavid for the first time

Nowadays, we all know how fast Connor McDavid is. The things he does — no one else can. But when he was new to the NHL, not everyone had seen just how good he was firsthand. The first time Jay Bouwmeester saw McDavid, he had a hilarious reaction.

Jay Bouwmeester was drafted third overall by the Florida Panthers in 2003. In addition to playing for the Panthers, he also suited up for the Calgary Flames and the St. Louis Blues, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2019. He captured one Olympic gold medal and two World Championship titles — quite a career. But in 2015, he saw Connor McDavid for the first time.

McDavid played his first NHL game on October 9, 2015, against the St. Louis Blues. On the podcast Ice Guardians Pod, hosted by former NHL legends and best friends Brett Hull and Kelly Chase, Chase recalled the first time Connor McDavid played in the NHL — and how he completely blew Bouwmeester away.

”Tell that kid to…”

“I remember the first game he played in the NHL; it was in St. Louis. And I remember Jay Bouwmeester, who is a great skater. I was doing the game between the benches, broadcasting, and he went by Jay Bouwmeester — and I mean, Jay could skate — just like he was standing still. Jay came to the bench. He didn’t speak much; he was a really quiet guy. He looked at me and said,
‘Hey, you get a chance, tell that f*cking kid to slow down,’” Kelly recalls.
