Oilers’ Zach Hyman out Saturday, will miss another week, coach says

The Edmonton Oilers will have to survive another stretch without one of their top forwards.

Despite hopes that he would be able to return from a wrist injury in early November, Oilers winger Zach Hyman is slated to be out for Saturday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks and is in line to miss another week of action, head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters Wednesday.

Saturday’s showdown against Chicago would be the first game Hyman would be eligible to play after being placed on the injured reserve at the start of the season.

“I feel really good, I feel close,” Hyman said after skating at Oilers practice on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Toronto native fractured and damaged ligaments in his wrist during the playoffs last season, for which he underwent surgery.

He suffered the injury during Game 4 of the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars while getting the puck out of his zone and being caught by a hit from Mason Marchment in the neutral zone.

Hyman dropped his stick immediately and went to the locker room while holding his right arm.

The fifth-year Oiler played in 73 games last season, scoring 27 goals and 44 points with seven game-winners.

Edmonton has kept its head above water in the early goings of the season with a 5-4-2 record after 11 games. They currently sit fourth in the Pacific division.

The Oilers play host to the New York Rangers on Thursday (Sportsnet ONE, 9 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. MT) and suit up again at Rogers Place on Saturday against the Blackhawks for Hockey Night in Canada (Sportsnet, 10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. MT).
