Greer, Frederic given 10-minute misconducts after Panthers-Oilers scuffle

A.J. Greer could be getting a phone call from Dana White sometime soon, but it’s likelier he’ll hear from the NHL’s department of player safety before that.

The Florida Panthers winger was given a 10-minute misconduct on Saturday for his part in a scuffle against the Edmonton Oilers.

After a routine save and a blown whistle in the Oilers’ end, tensions between the familiar foes quickly boiled over. Greer initially got into it with Brett Kulak before his focus quickly shifted to Trent Frederic.

The two tussled for a bit before Greer hooked his hands behind Frederic for a UFC-esque double-leg takedown. The Oilers forward avoided any injury on the play despite his hand falling back, and once the dust settled, Frederic was also given a 10-minute misconduct for his part in the incident.

While not a one-to-one re-enactment of Jalen Chatfield’s takedown of Connor McMichael last season, there were similarities, and the Carolina Hurricanes defenceman wasn’t met with supplemental discipline for his actions, even after slamming the helmet-less Washington Capitals forward to the ice.

For what it’s worth, Frederic did have his helmet on when Greer swooped him off his feet.

It’s safe to say there’s been no love lost early in the Stanley Cup Final rematch.
