The Canadiens’ goaltending issues continue to plague them

The Montreal Canadiens recalled goaltender Jacob Fowler from their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, less than an hour after their 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night.

Montreal saw both their current NHL goalies struggle against the Lightning, as Jakub Dobes started the game but was pulled after giving up three goals on 14 shots through the first period. Sam Montembeault fared no better in relief, giving up three goals on 13 shots through 40 minutes.

In 15 games with the Rocket this season, Fowler has a 10-5-0 record with a .919 save percentage (SV%) and 2.09 goals against average (GAA). Now there’s a chance Montreal fans will see their top prospect make his first NHL regular-season start.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Things are ugly in Montreal.

Carter Hutton: It’s not just ugly, it’s fragile! I was in this situation when I was in St. Louis, both Jake Allen and I struggled. You can feel the same energy on this bench. I’ve been the guy who is playing well and the guy who is playing bad.

Dobes has been good and he was a great story at the beginning of the year. I circle back to the game against the New Jersey Devils where they blew it late, lost in overtime, and he was crying in his postgame interview. He was teary eyed.

From a professional standpoint, you have to compartmentalize. You have a window to be upset and be competitive, but you have to park it and move on. That’s part of being a good goaltender, and right now, they’re not getting that.
