The Edmonton Oilers pulled off a blockbuster deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday that has re-shaped their goaltending picture.
Tristan Jarry is now headed to the Oilers, and with Stuart Skinner going the other way, it’s clear he’ll be given the role as Edmonton’s number one for the remainder of the season and for any possible Stanley Cup Playoff run.
Long seen as the main factor that has prevented Connor McDavid, Leon Draisatil and the Oilers from hoisting the Cup, the goaltending question has been put to bed by this decisive move from general manager Stan Bowman.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed what type of netminder Oilers fans can expect to see when Jarry suits up for their team.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I think this is an upgrade for Edmonton, from a Pittsburgh perspective, I can’t believe they got out of this contract… This is a guy, Hutts, who cleared waivers 10 months ago.
Carter Hutton: It’s crazy to get him now and move him off the books… He’s been good. This is a guy that we look back on his stats, yes outside of last year’s blemish, he had an .893 last year in 36 games for the Pens… It just goes to show you, over 307 games, he has a .909 save percentage, and he’s very good. I guess, technically, he’s a very good first-shot goalie, but what you’re going to find is that he’s a little clunky in post integration plays. Something you guys see a lot with Calvin Pickard, he’s at times not as smooth as the technical goalies, but this guy is a puck-stopper. If he sees it, he saves it. I think that is going to be a very valuable asset where with Skinner, it was those bad ones that just left you always wanting a little bit more.
