One week after acquiring Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Edmonton Oilers might need to dip into the goalie trade market again.
But they don’t have much time to make a decision with the holiday roster freeze kicking in at midnight on Friday night.
Jarry was forced to leave Thursday’s win over the Boston Bruins after coming up slowly while pushing his leg across the crease.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch didn’t have an update after the game, but Calvin Pickard, who replaced Jarry in the net, told Sportsnet’s Gene Principe that “It didn’t look good.”
One team that could provide a solution to the Oilers’ goalie woes is the Buffalo Sabres, who are carrying three goalies on their NHL roster: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Colten Ellis and Alex Lyon. Ellis is currently out with a concussion, but new Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen has said the three-goalie setup “is not the ideal situation.”

On Friday’s edition of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wondered if the Oilers and Sabres could be a match. Friedman said the Oilers looked into signing Lyon when he was a free agent in the summer and have made two calls to the Sabres recently.
“Edmonton has spoken about (Lyon), they’ve done their research on him, they’ve looked into him again this season, they called the Sabres a couple of times in recent weeks, I think before Kekalainen was officially hired,” Friedman said. “It comes down to, is Buffalo ready to do this, and it also comes down to how serious Jarry might be hurt.
“But I wouldn’t be surprised if Edmonton makes a call to Buffalo Friday if they haven’t already.”
The Oilers are travelling from Boston to Minnesota on Friday, and it’s unclear how long Jarry will be out. But if the veteran goalie is going to miss time, another trade could be coming soon for the Oilers.
