Hurricanes’ Seth Jarvis, Jaccob Slavin out week-to-week with injuries

The Carolina Hurricanes will have to make do without a couple of core pieces.

Forward Seth Jarvis and defenceman Jaccob Slavin are both out week-to-week with upper-body injuries, the team announced on Monday.

Jarvis exited Friday’s loss to the Florida Panthers after crashing into the post in overtime. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said afterward that the forward would be “out a while.”

Jarvis, 23, is Carolina’s leading goal scorer by a wide margin. He posted 19 goals and eight assists through 33 games this season, while Sebastian Aho is the only other Hurricane with 10-plus goals on the season with 13.

He is coming off back-to-back 67-point campaigns with goal totals of 33 and 32.

If the young forward were to miss considerable time, his chances to make Team Canada’s Olympic squad become murkier. Jarvis was on Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off team, where he registered one assist in three games.

Slavin, the dependable blue-liner, missed 29 games earlier this season with a lower-body injury before returning Dec. 14.

It is unclear what caused the latest injury. Slavin also missed Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In just five games this season, he is averaging 17:13 per night and has been held without a point.

The Hurricanes are back in action Tuesday when they host the Panthers.
