Henrique sustained the injury during Tuesday’s 6-2 win over the Nashville Predators. He had just two shifts before leaving the game early in the first period, with the reason for his departure not obvious. The Oilers also never confirmed his departure from the game. He had just a blocked shot and a faceoff loss in 2:25 of ice time in the win.
With Henrique not expected to return until after the Olympic break, that would imply Henrique will return around late February for Edmonton’s road trip in California, with the team set to play the Anaheim Ducks on February 25th for the first game of that trip. Edmonton plays 15 games in between now and the Olympic break.
Henrique has struggled this season with just two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 43 games with the Oilers, and is on pace for the lowest point total in a full season in his NHL career. Also known for his defensive game, he’s at least performed well in that regard with a -0.054 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals against per 60 minutes.
With Henrique out of the lineup, one of Trent Frederic or Andrew Mangiapane will have to enter the lineup to replace the Brantford, Ontario product, although how the lineup will shake up has yet to be confirmed. Both Frederic and Mangiapane have disappointed mightily this season, as Frederic has just two goals and one assist for three points in 41 games in the first year of an eight-year contract, while Mangiapane hasn’t been the top-six scoring presence that Edmonton anticipated with five goals and six assists for 11 points in 40 games.
The Oilers currently sit in second in the Pacific Division with a 21-16-6 record. They will begin life without Henrique when they visit the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at 6 p.m. MST.
