New York Rangers president/general manager Chris Drury has put his thoughts on paper for the struggling team’s disgruntled fans.
In the aftermath of fans chanting ‘Fire Drury’ at recent home games, the Rangers published a letter from Drury about the team’s direction on Friday.
In the letter, Drury promises action.
“With our position in the standings and injuries to key players this season, we must be honest and realistic about our situation,” Drury wrote. “We are not going to stand pat — a shift will give us the ability to be smart and opportunistic as we retool the team.
“This will not be a rebuild. This will be a retool built around our core players and prospects.”
Hockey fans already know the name, but this is not the blog. From Sportsnet, 32 Thoughts: The Podcast with NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas is a weekly deep dive into the biggest news and interviews from the hockey world.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Drury also met with the team Friday to tell them about his plan.
The written memo brings back memories of 2018 for Rangers fans when then-president Glen Sather and GM Jeff Gorton wrote a letter telling supporters they planned to be active heading into the trade deadline. Several weeks later, star forward Rick Nash was traded to the Boston Bruins.
The 2025-26 Rangers are last in the Eastern Conference and fell to a woeful 5-13-4 at home with an 8-4 loss against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. It was New York’s fifth loss in a row.
“We know and feel your disappointment with how the season has gone to this point,” Drury wrote. “We are just as frustrated and want nothing more than to deliver an on-ice product you can be proud of — it drives us every day.”
Drury hired former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan last off-season to replace Peter Laviolette after the team missed the playoffs, but the results have not improved.
Drury, who finished his playing career with the Rangers in 2011, joined the team’s front office in 2015. He became president/GM in 2021.
The Rangers made the playoffs in the first three years with Drury at the helm, highlighted by two runs to the Eastern Conference Final.
But this season has been particularly ugly. While the home record has been a huge talking point, the team also suffered a 10-2 loss in Boston last weekend.
Now, all eyes are on Drury.
“You will begin to see some of our plans come to light in the coming weeks and months,” he wrote.
