Canucks, Flames looking to make moves sooner than later

Two teams in Western Canada near the bottom of the standings are poised to shake up their rosters well before the trade deadline.

On Friday’s 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on the latest developments for the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks.

The Flames are looking to get a trade completed with defenceman Rasmus Andersson before the Olympic trade deadline on Feb. 4, Friedman said.

“I believe the Flames want the deal done and now what I also believe is Rasmus Andersson would like a trade done by then, too,” Friedman said.

The Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars are among the teams believed to be interested in a deal for Andersson, who is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer.

As for the last-place Canucks, many options are on the table.

“They’ve basically said now we’ll listen (on offers for) everybody,” Friedman said.

Conor Garland’s name has been in trade rumours, while Friedman thinks defenceman Filip Hronek could attract as much interest as anyone on their roster.

“He’s low maintenance, he doesn’t say much, he works hard, he competes hard, he’s a heck of a player,” Friedman said.

Hronek is on a $7.25-million cap hit through 2032. However, he does have a no-movement clause so he’d have to approve any deal.
