Ryan Whitney’s classic chirp of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins resurfaces

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins skated in his 1,000th NHL game on Sunday. He then became just the second player in Edmonton Oilers history to reach the milestone. To celebrate the achievement, an old clip of Nugent-Hopkins has resurfaced. And fans can’t stop laughing.

Drafted first overall in 2011, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has become a key part of the core that has helped lead the Edmonton Oilers to two straight Stanley Cup Finals. He hasn’t quite developed into the superstar some fans hoped for. But he has established himself as a very reliable and effective player, posting a points-per-game average of 0.79 in the regular season and 0.84 in the postseason.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ 1,000th NHL game

In Sunday night’s 5–0 win over the St. Louis Blues, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins played his 1,000th game as an Oiler, becoming the first player in franchise history to play all 1,000 of his NHL games with Edmonton. He also scored the opening goal, making him the 10th player in NHL history to score in both his debut and his 1,000th game.
“I haven’t scored in a couple of weeks, too, so it was obviously fun to do that on a night like tonight,” Nugent-Hopkins told NHL.com afterward. “It’s hard to put into words right now, but it was a fun night. I thought the guys played great, and Ingram played outstanding.”

In honor of his 1,000th game, an old video has now gone viral among hockey fans. The clip, from October 2011, shows Ryan Nugent-Hopkins appearing on After Hours on Hockey Night in Canada. He talks about being new to the NHL and answers questions from fans—one of whom turns out to be Ryan Whitney, now famous for hos podcast Spittin’ Chiclets.
At the time, Whitney was the Oilers’ assistant captain and decided to throw a hilarious chirp at his young teammate.
“I’m a huge fan,” Whitney joked. “I was just wondering—have you ever been mistaken for the girl from the movie Juno?”
As he asked the question, the broadcast cut to a side-by-side comparison of Nugent-Hopkins and actress Ellen Page.
