Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid day-to-day with a lower-body injury

Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch announced Tuesday that forward Connor McDavid is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Knoblauch noted that McDavid suffered the aliment during the third period of Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames, McDavid did not play in the final five minutes of regulation. He notched two assists and three shots on goal in 20:39 minutes of ice time.

Knoblauch said McDavid has a lower-body injury. He felt some discomfort at the end of the Calgary game and didn’t play the last five minutes.

McDavid has notched 31 goals and 99 assists for 130 points in 74 games this season. Leaguewide, McDavid ranks first in assists and third in points behind Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov. McDavid is one assist away from 100 assists which would make him the the first 100-assist player since Wayne Gretzky in 1990-91. Only three players have ever achieved 100 assists in a season that being Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr.

This season, he became the sixth player in NHL history to record seven 100-point seasons following: Wayne Gretzky (15 times), Mario Lemieux (10 times), Marcel Dionne (eight times), Mike Bossy (seven times) and Peter Stastny (seven times).

The 2015 No. 1 overall pick has amassed 334 goals and 646 assists for 980 points in just 643 games over parts of nine seasons. McDavid has the chance to eclipse Mike Bossy of the 1,000-point mark, Bossy did it in 656 career regular season games.

Edmonton is set to face off against the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow and the Arizona Coyotes on Friday. The Oilers have just six games remaining on the 2023-24 schedule. Edmonton sits second in the Pacific Division with a 47-24-5 record and 99 points through 76 games. They trail four points back of the first-seeded Vancouver Canucks.
