Good news out of Edmonton this morning as captain Connor McDavid told media he would be playing tonight versus the San Jose Sharks.

McDavid missed the last two games with a lower-body injury, McDavid last played on April 6 against the Calgary Flames where he tallied two assists. Edmonton dropped two out of the three games during McDavid’s absence to the Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks, picking up their lone win 5-1 over the Vegas Golden Knights.

McDavid has notched 31 goals and 99 assists for 130 points in 74 games. The 27-year-old is attempting to be the fourth player in NHL history to record 100 assists in a single season joining the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr.

This season, he became the sixth player in NHL history to record seven 100-point seasons following: Wayne Gretzky (15 times), Mario Lemieux (10 times), Marcel Dionne (eight times), Mike Bossy (seven times) and Peter Stastny (seven times).

The 2015 No. 1 overall pick has amassed 334 goals and 646 assists for 980 points in just 643 games over parts of nine seasons. McDavid has the chance to eclipse Mike Bossy of the 1,000-point mark, Bossy did it in 656 career regular season games.

Edmonton is set to face off against the San Jose Sharks tonight, Wednesday in Arizona against the Coyotes in what will be their final home game in Arizona. Then the Oilers will round out the 2023-24 regular season on the road against the Colorado Avalanche.

Edmonton sits second in the Pacific Division with a 48-25-6 record and 102 points through 79 games. They trail five points back of the first-seeded Vancouver Canucks. If the Oilers lose tonight, they will not clinch the Pacific Division title.
