Sam O'Reilly

Sam O’Reilly is a smart, versatile forward who brings a balanced game and a strong competitive edge. Drafted 32nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft, O’Reilly has quickly become one of the organization’s more intriguing prospects. He spent the 2023–24 season with the London Knights of the OHL, where he posted 56 points in 68 games — a standout campaign that earned him a spot on the OHL Second All-Rookie Team.

O’Reilly’s game is built on hockey sense, two-way reliability, and a strong motor. He’s not the flashiest player on the ice, but he rarely makes poor decisions. Whether deployed at center or on the wing, he consistently finds ways to contribute — winning board battles, disrupting plays in the defensive zone, and supporting the puck in transition. His vision and poise allow him to make the right play under pressure, and he has shown early signs of developing into a reliable distributor and secondary scoring threat.

Physically, O’Reilly is well-rounded. At 6-foot-1 and nearly 190 pounds, he uses his body well to protect the puck and maintain possession in the offensive zone. His skating, while not elite, is serviceable, and continued development in his explosiveness and edgework will be key as he moves toward the pro level. He’s not afraid to play in the hard areas and takes pride in doing the little things right — traits that often translate well to the NHL.

With the Oilers looking to build out their depth and surround their core with smart, cost-controlled players, O’Reilly fits the mold of a long-term contributor. While he may not project as a top-line scorer, his all-around game gives him a strong chance of carving out a middle-six role — perhaps as a dependable penalty killer, third-line center, or utility forward who can move up the lineup when needed. If his offensive game continues to evolve, he could be a valuable piece for the Oilers in the seasons ahead.
