Scouting Report

Samuel Jonsson is a promising Swedish goaltender who has rapidly climbed the ranks since being drafted 158th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2022. Standing at 6'5", Jonsson boasts the ideal frame for a modern NHL goalie, using his size effectively to cover the net and control angles. In the 2024–25 season with BIK Karlskoga of HockeyAllsvenskan, he posted a stellar 1.88 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage, and six shutouts in just 24 starts—leading the league in GAA and shutouts, and finishing second in save percentage. His performance earned him Allsvenskan Goaltender of the Year honors and a three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers in April 2025.

What sets Jonsson apart is not just his size but his poise and consistency. He shows excellent movement for a big netminder and has proven capable of carrying the load through high-pressure stretches, including a remarkable four-game shutout streak. While he’ll need time to adapt to the pace and smaller rinks in North America, his upside is clear. With further development in the AHL, Jonsson has the potential to become a reliable NHL backup or more, making him one of the most intriguing goaltending prospects in Edmonton’s system.
